PostSubject: An Unfinished Story   An Unfinished Story I_icon_minitimeWed Jan 27, 2010 3:42 am

I've been writing a story on another forum but then stopped for some reason. Now I added to it and thought you all might like to read it. Enjoy.

It's a very cold morning. My teeth chatter as I wait for the school bus to come. My muscles shiver with the wind breeze that also makes my mouth shake. I stand here with the other kids also waiting for the school bus who are shivering as well. One of the kids turn to me and ask, "When will the bus come?" I reply, "I don't know, soon maybe". I'm not a big fan of going to school, but I don't want to be standing out in this cold either. A minute or two later, the bus finally arrives; it stops to let us on. Everytime that bus door opens, I see that bus driver with that scary look. All wrinkled with a few warts on the side of her face; not to mention she is very fat.

My mom always told me to do well in school, so I can have a successful life and get a good job. She mentioned that by not doing well, I could end up with a horrible job such as a bus driver. Every morning I see this bus driver and trust me, I'm going to do well in school so I don't end up like her. Well, the good thing is the bus is warm and it's freezing cold out here, so I rush onto the bus. I go and sit next to my best friend, Omari, who I have known for like a year. He's like my brother in a way. "Kaylah, did you do the math problems we were supposed to do?", he asked. "Uh-oh", I replied, "I forgot to do them".
"I did to."
"Well, my dad was over last night to visit me. Like almost all the time, him and my mom got into a fight. I don't know what they were arguing about, but I heard a big crash to the wall and then him storming out. I went in the kitchen and find a glass bottle shattered in pieces on the floor right next to my mom who looked very scared."
"Well at least you are ok."
"Yeah."

We talked the whole bus ride to school. My mom and dad never got married. Ever since I can remember, I would have to share the time I live with mom and the time I live with dad. He's not around much these days for reasons I don't really know. It's useually just my mom and I. If I ever ask her why dad isn't around, she just replies with he just prefers his friends over his family. I don't think that is the real reason because anytime he is around, it's constant screaming and sometimes a bit violent; it's like they hate each other. I try not to think about it too much cause when I do, it makes me tear up.

The bus arrives at school so all the kids including Omari and I get off and head to our classroom. We are both in the 4th grade which is on the further end of the school. We walk in the classroom, put our bags by the wall and sit in our seats. I see our teacher, Mrs. Denit walk up to the front of the classroom. "Good morning class!", she screams. "Good morning Mrs. Denit.", we all reply. "I want you all now to turn in last night's math problems.", she says to us. I myself just remembered that I didn't do them, which means a phone call home to my mom. When my mom gets phone calls about me not doing my work, she grabs her belt and whips at me till I am sore on my behind. "Ahem....your homework please.", I hear Mrs. Denit say as she stands before me. I guess I'll be seeing my mom's belt today, so I tell her "I forgot to do it." Anytime someone forgets homework, Mrs. Denit gets mad so she says to me, "Kaylah, I'm going to call your mom and tell her how you forgetting to do your homework is unacceptable." She gets to Omari, and he gets the same sentence to; his mom doesn't have a belt for him. If anything, she doesn't really do anything if she gets a phone call.

Now hours later recess time came, so we all head outside. It is warmer now than this morning. I'm thinking about going to go collect grass and flowers to make grass necklaces. I like crafting stuff out of whatever material I can find. Omari tends to play on the playground while I go craft stuff. That's one difference between him and I. I love to make things like necklaces out of grass and he doesn't really like to make much things. Few minutes later I finish collecting and crafting the necklaces out of grass and flowers and start to walk over to where Omari is so I can go play with him. Next thing I notice is him and the school bully, Josh, facing each other. "Why you touching my ball loser!", Josh yells. "It rolled over to me.", Omari explains. "Don't touch my ball!", Josh yells. After that he starts to swing his fists at Omari. Omari falls to the ground and Josh continues to swing. All the kids are cheering "Fight! Fight! Fight!" as Omari is getting himself beat. I have to do something, I think to myself, I can't let my best friend just get beat up. No teacher is around in sight. I can't just take on Josh myself with my own hands as he was taller and stronger then me. I then look to my left and see a plastic bat. I remember how mom would hit with me with the belt. I also remember how dad hit me to but he was more brutal and would hit me anywhere. With knowledge of how they beat me when I do something wrong, I picked up the bat and rush towards Josh and start to lash wildly at him with the bat to get him off Omari. I keep swinging and swinging as hard as I can without stopping until teachers finally came over to break everything all up. When I finally stop, I look and notice that I beat Josh more then he beat Omari. Josh was sitting there on the ground spitting blood from his mouth. His nose was bleeding and it starts to look like his left eye was changing to a dark purple color. I was a bit in shock that I did all this. I look at Omari and only see a few bruises and scrapes on him. The kids are dead silent. A teacher looks at me and said, "What is your name?" I reply "Kaylah Small." "Well I'm going to have to take you to the principals office." She says in a voice that sounds unhappy. I then am escorted to the principals office.

To be continued...

The principals office was pretty small; the chairs were comfortable. I sat their staring at the paintings on the wall of a palm tree on a beach, a vase full of flowers, and a portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King while I waited for the principal to call me in. The secretary looks really focused into her computer as she types and types away. I knew I was really in for it when I got home now. Anytime I acted up in school or disrespected my elders, my mom would bring out the belt. Despite all that, I felt what I did was right. If anything, I feel pretty proud of myself; that Josh kid got what he deserved. I sure hope Omari is ok.

"Kaylah Small", the secretary turned and said to me, "the principal would like to see you now." I get up off the chair and walk in to see her. The principal looks at me with her big eyes and curly hair with a very disappointing look.
"Kaylah, is fighting allowed in this school?"
"No ma'am."
"Were you the one beating Josh Marshall with a plastic bat?"
"Yes ma'am."
"This is unacceptable behavior in our school Kaylah."
"I was trying to get him off my friend."
"You get an adult if you see fighting and they will take care of it."
"But..."
"Two wrongs don't make a right Kaylah. Two days suspension and a written apology letter. Your mom will be here shortly to pick you up."

I knew I was in for it now big time once I heard about the suspension. My mom wants me to do well in school and the fact that I will be missing days over fighting will make her go crazy. The apology letter, I shouldn't have to write an APOLOGY LETTER! Josh got what he deserved. What is his punishment for beating up Omari? Anytime he gets in trouble, he just sits in the office for a half n hour to think about what he did. I refuse to apologize and I don't care how bad my mom beats me with the belt for doing so. It's like nobody understands that I had to do something to save my friend and I refuse to apologize for that.

15 minutes or so later, my mom arrives at the school and picks me up, drags me out the school and to her rusty old silver Ford. I am then thrown into the backseat of the car and start feeling the leather of her belt lash at me, yet this time anywhere but my behind. It's as if my dad was beating me whenever he did. About a minute or two later of getting whipped at, she puts her hand on my shoulder then starts to cry.
"Why Kaylah, why!? I thought I was a good parent. I raised you since the day you came from my womb. I fed you and tried to steer you toward a bright future, but now you're just becoming like your father."
I feel a bit guilty on the inside. I have never hurt anyone in my life before and it's not like me to beat up another kid. Maybe she is right and I am becoming like my father. Despite the physical punishment my mom gave, she was always there for me. I love my mom and she beats me because I know she loves me.
"I'm sorry Mamma.", I reply, and give her a hug.

Couple minutes later, we head back home. When we get there, both of us get out of the car and walk up to the 3rd floor of our appartment. When we step inside, she turns to me and asks me what happened at school. I tell her how Omari was getting beat up and no teachers were around forcing me to take action. She looks at me and doesn't say a word. "I'm going to make a quick phone call.", she says as she walks into the other room and locks the door. I head to my room and sit on my bed. I feel like I want to cry, but I know that won't solve anything so I just sit there and stare at my wall. A minute later, I hear a smash. I turn around and see a rock on the floor along with a hole in my window. I run to the window and see five kids speed off on their bikes.

To be continued...

My mom finally gets off the phone and walks into my room. She sees the rock on the floor and the hole in the window. She then looks at me and says, "Kaylah, you arn't to leave this appartment during your time out of school. You are grounded." I'm not really suprised to hear this. If anything, I'm suprised she's being a little soft about this because she expects alot from me. When I do something wrong, she gets really mad, and something like suspension would make her go crazy. "I'm going back to work now.", she says to me and then walks out the door.

Now being bored, I look at the clock and see school isn't over for another two more hours. I can't call Omari or any of my other friends yet since they are still in school. I decide to reach under my bed, and grab my box of gimp and decide to craft some things. I have made alot of things with gimp such as braclets, keychains, and necklaces. I tend to make alot of animal keychains just because I like animals. Right now, I feel like crafting a wolf because of how I went in and fought Josh to protect Omari regardless of how much smaller and weaker I was to Josh.

The wolf took me just about the whole two hours to make. I decide to give it to Omari next time I see him since he likes wolves and it's a symbol to represent what happened today. All that gimp crafting made me hungry, so I head into the kitchen to make myself a bowl of pretzels and pour a glass of orange juice. When I sit down to eat, I hear a knock on the door. I get up and go look through the little glass hole and see Omari and my other friend, Michelle, there on the other side. I unlock and open the door. "Kaylah, Josh's older brother is after you!", Michelle yells to me." He has his friends with him to, we just saw them on bikes.", Omari says afterward. I look at Omari. He looks ok to me. A bandaid or two over some of the cuts and a couple small bruises but nothing major. "I'm not to worried", I told them, "besides, I really don't think Josh will mess with you anymore." Having said that, I hear another smash in the house. I look back and see another rock on the floor. "They are here!", Michelle crys, "Go hide Kaylah!". I invite them both in and we stay hidden in the house occasionally peering from the window.

"It's been 15 minutes and they are still their waiting for you Kaylah.", Michelle turns and says to me. "I got to get home, my mom expects me there.", Omari then says afterward. I tell them to just go while I stay here. They go out the door and I watch them from the window. Not long after, I see one of the kids grab Omari and throw him onto the side of the building. They then throw him onto the ground. I felt angry inside watching them just throw him around like that. I decided to break my mom's rule and step outside to do something. I run down the stairs but then when I get down there, I see five big kids staring at me. I stop and a chill runs down my back and I feel pretty scared inside. One of them gets closer to me. "RUN KAYLAH RUN!", I hear Omari scream while he lays there on the ground. I was too scared to move and I felt a hand grip me by my chest.

To be continued...

I look up and see this tall, buff teenager gripping me. He doesn't look to happy either. He throws me to the ground, kicks me, then grabs me up again. Being really scared, I just start to flail my arms and legs randomly to try and get away. Next thing I notice his grip on me loosens and I'm free. I look and I see him holding himself between the legs. He looks like he is in pain. Regardless, I saw this as a chance to run. I spot Omari and Michelle and sprint over.

"Let's go!", Michelle yells and we all dart toward Omari's house. I can hear the group of kids chasing us on their bikes. They were gaining on us, but I can see Omari's house up ahead. We sprint into the garage where we see Omari's dad. The kids on the bike's stop. "Can I help you guys?" I hear Omari's dad ask them. "We want the both that girl with the pigtails and her little friend in the blue." I hear one them reply back. He was refering to Omari and I. Omari's dad turns back to us. I tell him, "They want to beat us up." He then looks back at the kids on the bikes. "I think you all should leave or I'm calling the police." he then states. "Whatever, we will get them later." one replies back and then they all leave.

"You three alright?" Omari's dad asks us. Still tired from running, I tell him that I think I'll be ok. I can still feel where that one guy kicked me on the side, but I decided to ignore it. He asks us to explain the whole situation and we tell them. He tells us if they bother us again, tell him and he will call the police. I then realize that I need to get back home. I say goodbye to Michelle, Omari, and his dad. I knew it would be really bad if my mom found out I was outside. I was able to make it back home safely. I walk up the apartment stairs and open the door. I feel tired from all this. My side aches from where I was kicked, but I'm happy that Omari was brought home safely. I don't know how I am going to explain the hole in my window to my mom. Being tired I decided to go into my room and take a nap. I fall onto the bed and pass out quickly.
